Review of Article You Don't Look Like A Veteran

Oh, you're a Veteran? But, you don't LOOK like a veteran. What does a Veteran look like ? Women have served in varying roles in the US Military since the Revolutionary War, but not officially recognized until 1948. Over 3 million women have served, and today make up approximately 18% of the Active Duty military.

Review of “You Don’t Look Like A Veteran”  by  Renea Jones-Hudson

Published in BRAINZ magazine, July, 2024

The statement "You don’t look like a Veteran" often reflects implicit biases that diminish a woman's accomplishments and sacrifices. Questioning a woman's status as a veteran overlooks her contributions and the realities she has faced in service to her country. This bias can be particularly harmful as it perpetuates the myth that women’s roles in the military are less significant or noteworthy.”

"...women in the military have faced significant resistance and skepticism. Goldstein (2018), in her article titled “Why are you trying to destroy the last good thing men have? Understanding resistance to women in combat jobs,” highlights the ongoing resistance to accepting female presence in the military. Societal and institutional biases have long hindered women's full integration into combat roles. The persistence of these biases reflects deep-seated fears and misconceptions about gender roles and the capabilities of women, further complicating the perception of what a veteran "should" look like."

As a Veteran of the US Air Force, my status as a Veteran was rarely, if ever, challenged, but then, I never sought treatment at a VA Medical Center, nor applied for any benefits beyond my G. I. Bill for college.   However, I know many women Veterans who not only have their service challenged, but who, for whatever reasons, do not feel like they earned the title of Veteran:

  • Women showing up for an appointment at the VA will be asked for their “husband's” ID number, or not given the priority they have earned.
  • Women Veterans who get challenged for parking in a Veterans Only parking space, or wearing clothing that declares Veteran.
  • Women who declare that “I don’t think of myself as a Veteran” because I didn’t serve in a combat role.

Ms. Jones-Hudson highlights the service of many women who served with distinction, and rose to highest ranks in their respective services.

Ms. Jones-Hudson points out that such statements disrespect the roles, service, and sacrifice of our women in uniform.  The inherent gender-bias must be challenged and we much ensure that all Veterans, regardless of gender are honored and respected for their service.
